  • Dropped stitches in Tennessee history

    John Allison

    Hardcover (C. Elder--Bookseller, Aug. 16, 1971)
Description from the book flap: Judge John Allison tells us in his preface he had a twofold purpose in presenting this work. One was to relate and preserve the stories and historical accounts he had gleaned from many interviews with aged men and women in East Tennessee and North Carolina. He also used the historical accounts obtained from the territorial court records preserved in the courthouse at Jonesboro, Tennessee's oldest town. His second purpose was to present to the visitors of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition Dr. R.L. C. White's Centennial Dream, which he incorporated in this work. Among the work's most popular stories was the fascinating Bacon account of the duel between Avery and Jackson. Also of widespread interest is the account of Jackson's arrest of Russell Bean, the famous gunsmith. Because of these interesting stories and because many of the original editions were destroyed by fire, the work has become virtually unobtainable and, in fact, it has since been listed as one of Tennessee's twenty most important books.

  • Dropped Stitches in Tennessee History: Little Known Facts in the Earliest History of Tennessee

    John Allison

Hardcover (Overmountain Press, Jan. 1, 1991)
In addition to the area’s early history learned from his mother, much of the author's information in this comprehensive book was obtained by visiting and conversing with older residents in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. Having possession of the very earliest court records made in Jonesborough (1778–1800), the author made original investigations of the facts and the men who constituted the court. He quotes extensively from these old records kept in Washington County, noting that it was the first county established and organized in the state and included for quite a time all of the early settlements in what has been commonly known as “upper East Tennessee.” Along with stories about Jackson and others well known in Tennessee’s early history, numerous other names—such as Hump Gibson and the Widow Dyckes—are found in the old court records.
